As reported by the OIE, outbreaks of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza have affected numerous countries in regions around the globe over the last few months. These events have led to the deaths or preventative culling of hundreds of thousands of birds:
• Several countries in Asia and Africa reported the Asian lineage HPAI H5N1 in poultry and wild birds.
• In Asia (China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Korea and Vietnam), highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N6 continues to be reported in poultry and wild birds. The Asian lineage H5N6 causes severe clinical signs in poultry and associated mortality.
• Greece is the first country in Europe to report an outbreak of H5N6 in 2017.
• The HPAI H5N8 was reported in a backyard flocks in the United Kingdom, Korea and Russia and in commercial flocks in Zimbabwe, Korea, Italy (turkeys) and in wild birds in Belgium and the Netherlands.
• The highly pathogenic H7N9 virus was reported in different provinces in China.
• The new outbreak of H7N3, was recently reported by Mexico. In this case, no clinical signs were reported and the detection was made by the Veterinary Services through their active surveillance program.
The above mentioned reflect the ongoing risks of avian influenza, the dynamic international and national significance, and therefore the benefits of active surveillance to ensure early detection of outbreaks in commercial poultry. The OIE stresses the importance of active monitoring for Avian Influenza as the risk of new outbreaks remains and clinical signs are not always visible.*
